I swear this isn't a baby blog.

IMG_2809 - Version 2

We went over to Brian and Nikki’s for dessert and Christmas decorating tonight. Rowan’s getting pretty big, and he doesn’t particularly like to smile, but I got some pictures of him anyway. I’m just getting warmed up for the thousands of pictures I’m going to take of my kid, though...

Christmas lights!

200901132156.jpg

By my math, we have about 3,000 lights on the house. Putting the icicles on the roof was an exercise in treachery—especially the back corner of the house (the far right in the picture). Sitting on that downhill slope while leaning over to clip on lights was a bit terrifying. Although, I have to admit, it was worth it—and it will be much easier next year. I couldn’t have done it without you, crazy multifunction ladder.

Pretending we have a football team

200901132154.jpg

If we can’t do it in real life, I’ll do it on the Xbox. College football ’07. 3 punts returned for touchdowns. 2 pick-sixes, including one with 17 seconds left in the game. 2 safeties. Several one-play drives. 110-17. It was epic.

An early Merry Christmas from Molly!

IMG_2649

We’re almost done decorating the house for Christmas. It looks pretty awesome, and there will definitely be pictures coming. Katie definitely has an eye for this stuff.

In the meantime, I caught Molly taking a nap on one of our new Christmas pillows. Fortunately this time, unlike most times, she actually stayed asleep long enough for me to run upstairs and get my camera.

This comic really hits home sometimes.

200901132146.jpg

You wouldn’t know it from the name, but What The Duck is a webcomic about photography and photographers. Every once in a while, a strip will seem particularly appropriate. The strip above reminds me of this weekend, when some lady at the state XC meet saw me with my (borrowed) 70-200 f/2.8L and (borrowed) Gitzo carbon fiber monopod and asked me if I was with a newspaper or something.

Now HERE'S Some Change I Can Get Behind

Newsweek has been running a series of 'special projects' that involve getting reporters deep within the presidential candidates' campaigns under the condition that they can't reveal information until after the election. However, if they would have released this quote from Barack Obama, it might have actually helped:

When he was preparing for them during the Democratic primaries, Obama was recorded saying, "I don't consider this to be a good format for me, which makes me more cautious. I often find myself trapped by the questions and thinking to myself, 'You know, this is a stupid question, but let me … answer it.' So when Brian Williams is asking me about what's a personal thing that you've done [that's green], and I say, you know, 'Well, I planted a bunch of trees.' And he says, 'I'm talking about personal.' What I'm thinking in my head is, 'Well, the truth is, Brian, we can't solve global warming because I f---ing changed light bulbs in my house. It's because of something collective'."

Whether you agree with what he plans to do or not, you've got to admit that's some refreshing honesty in a sea of bullcrap.

A Brief Comment on the Economy

From Overcoming Bias:

Few experts in our society could pull off saying:

Emergency!!! We will suffer terribly if you don't spend a trillion dollars right now overpaying for stuff from our friends! No, you don't have time to study the problem, nor will we present an analysis for your review. No, other experts in our field cannot actually see this problem, and there will never be data showing the problem really existed. You just have to trust us and give us the trillion right now!!

Source is here: Overcoming Bias: Trust Us!

My First Political Entry...

Without trying to get too one-sided, here are some great rejected John McCain phone scripts. For example:

"Hello. I'm calling for John McCain and the RNC because you need to know that Barack Obama won't stop repeating those stupid Chuck Norris facts. For example, before the third debate, Barack opened a bag of Lay's potato chips. My friends, I knew what was coming. I've been tested. It was either a Chuck Norris joke or a Seinfeld double dip. John McCain gets it. Chuck Norris can only eat one. But don't be fooled. Barack Obama was just pandering to the Florida vote. But you need to know that Barack Obama was for the cancellation of Walker, Texas Ranger before he was against it. And he also hates Everybody Loves Raymond. That's not reaching across the aisle. That's changing the channel on small-town American values. Not on John McCain's dial."

Molly Sees Something Interesting

Molly has to be just about the cutest dog ever. Every time I try to get a picture of her and Charlie she wants to come sniff the camera, but every once in a while I can catch a cute face without her realizing.

Say hello to Molly!

CRW_7298

CRW_7266

This is Molly, our new seven-week-old Beagle. She was living with a coworker's grandmother, but she proved to be too much to handle.

We introduced her to Charlie, and she seemed scared... for about 3 minutes. Pretty soon, they were running around in the backyard like they'd known each other for years. It's funny to be thinking of Charlie as the mature and well-behaved one!

Her hobbies include chewing lots of things, peeing on the rug, and being completely adorable. Check out the Flickr set to see more of the cuteness.

IBM Sucks at Everything, and I Hate Them

Warning: Super nerd post ahead...

My First YouTube Video...

The internet has really been excited about the Flip Video Camera recently. For $150 or so, you get a video camera with no zoom, no removable storage, but 640x480 video and surprisingly good quality. One of my favorite web celebrities, Merlin Mann of 43 folders, does a show called "30 Seconds with That Phone Guy" where he makes fun of those obnoxious people on cell phones in public by talking into his wallet. Literally is one of my favorite episodes, and since he recently had a daughter, he upgraded his fake phone.

Anyway, this inspired me to dig out my Flip camera as well. Mine's not the "retail" one, but the hacked $30 Pure Digital / CVS Disposable Digital Camcorder, complete with the super-ghetto torn-up Palm III sync cable for transfer.

Well, now there's a Mac utility that you can use to get videos off the camera, and you can dump them straight to YouTube! Here's a video I took of my friend Brandon wearing the last bit off of the back tires of his Corvette:

I'll hopefully upload some video of the house (and the dog) soon...

You down with ELP?

I wholeheartedly approve of one of the latest competitions to arise out of hiring a bunch of Type-A overachievers here at NI. As each start group moves out of training into "real work," they throw a happy hour for the department where they announce what team they'll be joining. These have gotten more and more ridiculous since they started shortly after I joined the company. (Luckily, we were the last start group that DIDN'T have to spend a bunch of money on one!) They often feature some well-done videos, decorations, excellent food, and lots of beer.

(Yes, beer at work. I have a picture of our President and CEO waiting in line for the keg at one of our company-wide parties, but I can't find it right now.)

Here's a music video from the latest happy hour:

A Long-Overdue Update

Well, we're in our house! I know I haven't posted in a while, because it's been a hectic two weeks. We have everything here, but I can't find anything I own because it's all in stupid boxes. We also don't have any hot water or air conditioning, which is fun. But we're getting settled, slowly but surely. I'll post some pictures when I can find my camera battery charger.

DIY Home Improvement: "Before"

Katie and I are going to make this house totally awesome, and the first steps are paint and floor. To show you exactly how awesome, here are two "before" pictures of the front and back rooms. I took a bunch of pictures and used the fantastic, free (and windows-only, unfortunately) AutoStitch to build them.

The front room:

Stay tuned for pictures of the improvements!

Hey, we bought a house!

IT'S DONE!

We're the proud owners of a house in Round Rock! We finished closing at 1pm or so and got right to work. The place was kind of torn up by renters, so we've got some work to do. "Phase 1" is painting the downstairs and installing laminate wood floors (awesome). Here's a boatload of pictures:

Good grief.

B&H Photo in New York somehow got its hands on a Canon 1200mm lens, and they're selling it for $99,000. There less than twenty of these lenses in existence. It weighs about as much as a truck and costs about as much as a house, but it can take some pretty amazing pictures. Check out the B&H page to see some sample shots.

Workout Generator Applescript: How I Managed to Nerd-ify Even the Most Simple of Sports

As some of you might have noticed from my "Project Fatass" post below, I'm trying to run a 5k in May. In order to do that, I probably need to be able to run a 1k first. I'm working on that.

Of course, since I use a computer---and AppleScript---for just about everything else, I figured I'd apply it to running as well. But unlike a lot of the other scripts I write, I think other people will find this useful.

Priceless.

I hate you, Time Warner

I just finished rebooting my stupid Time Warner digital cable box for about the 3700th time. When I turned it back on, I saw a Time Warner commercial making fun of satellite TV for--seriously--the fact that you have to reboot satellite TV boxes occasionally. This is from the same company that ran commercials on their own channels asking for people to come work for them in a call center to call their own existing cable customers and try to sell them more services. I think I'll switch to something else when we get the house.

Nonsensical But Amusing Analogies from British Dorks, pt.1

"I slipped an 8GB stick into the Cybershot without thinking. No matter how many photos I take, they will rattle around in that cavern of memory like a pea in a cathedral."

Stephen Fry, the original British dork. FYI, he was the narrator in the film version of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, so imagine the above quote in that deep, saliva-y British accent.

Why not me?

Turns out NI had a booth at MacWorld this year. I would have sacrificed a few toes to make it to the Mac promised land, but alas, it was not meant to be. The guy in the video even discusses using LabVIEW in a Windows virtual machine, which was the project I spearheaded! Of course, if I would have been manning the booth, I wouldn't have been able to wander around the showroom floor, or get into the keynote...

There has to be a better way to do this.

Lessons Learned in Running

When it's 35 degrees, and misting, and you've committed to start running, and your wife says "If you go running in that weather, you'll get sick," listen to her, because she's right.

9 Years in a Row!

Well, for the 9th year in a row, National Instruments is on Fortune's 100 Best Companies to Work For list. We came in at number 79 this year, up from 86 last year, and above Nike, Microsoft, and Yahoo. I can see our marketing department now--we always put up signs everywhere, and I know they were just aching to put NINE all over everything. And they sure did.

We recently made an offer on a house in Round Rock Ranch. It's a fantastic neighborhood right in the middle of Round Rock with 20-minute commutes for both of us. After a bit of back-and-forth, we seem to have reached an agreement on price, so unless there are any catastrophes (which is definitely possible), we'll be homeowners soon!

This Will Not End Well

This showed up in my friend Brian's facebook inbox:

Picture 4

Nevermind the whole "give me free support" thing— one thing I've learned from AE is that "quick" and "easy" questions are NEVER quick OR easy. Click the picture for the full size version.

I'm Special!

So as most of you know, I have been the team leader for my team since October. But as of yesterday, I've taken on a new job--I'm an AE Specialist now.

2007_NIWeek 029 It's technically in the same department, but it's definitely a different job. I no longer have daily phone shifts, which I'm pretty excited about. Now, I get to work very closely with our sales, marketing, R&D, and systems engineering departments. As a "test-side" AE Specialist, I'll mostly be doing proof-of-concept work for our sales force when they are trying to sell a big system; after all, big systems almost always include a whole lot of PXI. My first assignment is a unique challenge: I'm building a system with a giant PXI chassis connected to other hardware and a ridiculously-fast quad-core server, but it's for a company that builds and disassembles NUCLEAR WEAPONS, so I don't get to know much more about it than that.

I'm stoked that I get to stay in AE, which has a fantastic culture, and training that's second to none. But I also get out of the 'drudgery' of handling service requests every day, and I get to do a lot of varied, interesting work, and the visibility is fantastic. I'll make sure and add a post here when I get more interesting customer applications. I've always said that our customers do the coolest things in the world. Check out the video.

My Cool Awesome Flickr Page

I'm in the process of uploading my archive of 4,000 or so photos to my public page on Flickr. If you haven't noticed yet, random pictures also appear on the sidebar. If you have some time to kill, go check it out. I'll post new stuff (like California) as it happens, and I'll be catching up on old stuff at the same time.

Welcome Friends, Family, and "Others"

Howdy!

I've secretly had a blog for a while, but it was mainly for techie stuff. But there's a whole lot going on with Katie and me right now, and I figured this would be a good way to keep everyone up to date. I'll still be posting about my various nerd projects, but I hope to include a lot more about personal stuff (like cool trips, etc). So check back often!

If you know how blogs work, great. There's an RSS link on the right side for you power users. If you read a lot of blogs and you've never heard of RSS, it's the best thing since sliced bread--check out Google Reader and then add my blog to Google Reader.

If you'd like to get an update by email every time I post something, just sign up for e-mail notifications in the sidebar on the right. Then, it's like each of my blog posts is a special message just for you! Except it's not.

And if you only want to get a subset of what I post, I plan on eventually setting up fancy URLs like blog.chadbailey.net/personal, blog.chadbailey.net/tech, and so on. More on that later.

P.S. If you want to read up on some techno-nerdery, just scroll down the page.
